Chapter Eleven

I woke later in Mother Goose’s ward, groggy and with my shoulder tightly bandaged. Philip, Erik, Hans, and Aladdin were all standing over my bed, staring down at me anxiously. I groaned in my head, or so I thought until Erik chuckled softly.

“Sorry,” I muttered, trying to sit up slowly, and suddenly four pairs of hands were reaching for me. “Whoa, easy,” I said to them even as they all tried to say the same to me.

“Don’t say you’re fine, because you’re not. Not according to Mother Goose at least,” Philip frowned at me.

“I’m fine enough,” I grumbled back, nudging their hands away as I settled against the pillows and closed my eyes as the throb of pain went coursing through me. “I didn’t heal, how did I not heal?”

“Maybe you didn’t finish the story,” Aladdin suggested.

“But I did, I know I did. I had to have.” I frowned, closing my eyes as another throb of pain went through me, and I sucked in a sharp breath, waiting for it to pass.

“Maybe you’re in another story. It’s not the first time you’ve been in multiple stories at once,” Philip pointed out.

“Maybe.” I forced my eyes to open again and looked around at the boys who were all watching me carefully. “I’m fine, seriously.”

“Can you really fault us for being worried? You were eaten.” Hans said pointedly as he nodded at my shoulder.

“Sure, of course, but now I’m saying I’m okay. Just sore and aching, do you not have pain killers in this realm?”

“Pain...killers?” Erik asked.

“Like a potion or something that makes my arm numb, so I don’t feel it?”

“We have poultices. And there are a variety of other methods for pain relief.” Philip said. “And fairies, if your realm is lucky enough.”

“Don’t suppose you have one of those on you?” I cracked him a small smile as he just shook his head, unable to help the smile on his face in return.

“You really shouldn’t be joking. Things are getting serious. If Hans and I hadn’t shown up, you could have been seriously injured.”

“I know, and I’m glad you did show up… But all this attention is really unnecessary.”

“Are you really going to continue to deny the fact that we all care about you?” Erik asked, and it surprised me that the words were coming from him. Sure I knew how they all felt, and sure, I might have been trying to avoid it or deny it as he suggested, but I didn’t think he fell into that category. Of everyone, I thought maybe Erik was the only one who I was genuinely friends with and not someone who was looking for something more.

No one followed up what he said, instead they all stared at me waiting for me to reply.

“No.” I finally whispered, feeling the heat rising in my cheeks.

“Then stop dismissing our feelings. We care about you.” Aladdin said firmly.

“We’re worried about you.” Philip agreed.

I sighed and nodded my head, but it was Erik who continued, “if you haven’t figured out by now any of us would do anything you asked, then you have to be blind.
